For those who haven't quite seen this website before, there's a hoax site about treating a kitten like a Bonsai tree. It's a joke, people. Not a particularly good one, but a joke none the less. For some reason, the British version of the ASPCA sees a need not only to respond to this issue but to also call for the regulation of speech on the web. Now that's something that's not at all funny.
The Royal Society is well within their rights to criticize the people who put up the Bonsai Kitty site; the best answer to bad speech is good speech. Calling for banning the site not only is an immoral thing to do, it actually will backfire on the Society's intention (I can promise you that I would neither have written about the site or even gone there without first having read about the Society's call for "cleaning" up the web).
Thanks to Eugene for the pointer.
Posted by Casper at January 23, 2004 10:30 AMSo you actually think that its a bad idea for there to be regulation on the web? Yeah i agree that it would be, IF people knew how to have common sense and actually used the web for good and not to post inhumane things like "bonsai kitty." Whether its a hoax or not, there will be people who will see it and get the idea to try it, then making a harmless animal live in a jar until the animal ends up dying. Maybe if people weren't as screwed up like they are and it could be trusted that noone would follow through with this animal torture, noone would have to regualate anything but unfortunately they can't be.
Posted by: What? at June 22, 2004 10:21 PMI think that -- in almost every circumstance -- regulating speech is a bad idea.
"People who will see it and get the idea to try it". This is the same logic that has people trying to outlaw sex *and* violence in the media on the grounds that it encourages children to do bad things. That kind of thinking reminds me of Dick Cavett's comment: "There's comedy all over TV, but I don't see comedy in the streets."
Fundamentally, people are responsible for their own ideas and actions.
Posted by: Casper at June 22, 2004 10:34 PMI fully agree with the RSPCA. There MUST be an all-powerful, central authority to control all that world's population sees and hears. ONLY in this way, will we be able to protect very stupid people (Like the RSPCA.) from being upset by funny Internet sites, television and radio programs, books, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, public speech, private speech, or any form of media or communication that may tend to upset the very stupid. After all, even the very stupid themselves agree, that the most cursorily examination of history reveals, that 99% of the world’s problems have been caused by very stupid people being upset. Only by censoring ALL media, can we hope to forestall a global crisis. With the world poised on the brink of Armageddon, the stakes are just too high not to act! NOW IS THE TIME for all very stupid people to join with the RSPCA, and call for Total Global Censorship!
PS: Upon creation of the World Media Authority, I would like to nominate myself for the position of Director, or “Global Infoczar”, as I like to call it.
I think that the "bonzai kitty" website is grotesque. I hope the jerks that made the website get smacked with the law hard, because it's very wrong to promote animal cruelty over the internet. What if my kid was surfing on the web and used a search engine to find a cat and he came accross this website? If I can find this crap by mistake, I know that my kid -and other's kids- can.
Posted by: christopher at December 1, 2004 05:32 PMi only saw this website through an email i gpot from my friend and i thought that it was appauling its absolutly disgusting asnd i think that the person who made that website should go to jail and never be let near another cat or any other animal ever again.
Posted by: casey jones at December 23, 2004 09:03 AMMy friend told me about this crazy bonzai kitty website! I was just disgusted at the way the animals were treated. I would consider that a crime!! It's just sick and gross. I don't even think I know anybody who would want to look at this stuff!! It's practiclly animal cruelty!
Posted by: Jo at January 5, 2005 06:54 PMI find people who are easily offended, offensive. Therefore I wish all of your offended speech that severely offends me banned and I hope you all get jail time for it. Remember, freedom of speech never comes into play until someone says something you don't like. Dr. Benway, I would like to nominate myself as your second in command. Together we can crush all of this free flowing information and drive those who think they can actually express themselves into the earth! We will rise up and crush those who dare have individual thoughts and share them! Oh yes, books will burn! Your local library will only need to be as big as a phone booth to hold whatever works we want in it! The internet will only need one website, ours! Do you people know how much faster you computers and browsers will work? Your cache will only need to be set at a meg or two! See how much better limited speech is?
Posted by: Foo at January 24, 2005 04:29 PMFor our first order of business, let us get rid of all whiney easily offended people who have nothing better to do than be offended and talk about this or that should be banned or taken away for the simple fact that they don't like it. Whaddya say?
Posted by: Foo at January 24, 2005 04:35 PMtotally sick and disgusting if this is true... i can't believe there are people out there that would do this.
Posted by: Mark2448 at February 23, 2005 10:10 PMAnd yes I also do believe its animal cruelty... totally ludicrous acts by these sorry human beings that put the animals throug this. It needs to be stopped...and will be.
Posted by: Mark2448 at February 23, 2005 10:12 PMthis is soooo sick i cant even come up with words for it who ever does this needs to be put in thejar them selfs and NOT be given food at all the sick fucking people even the people that would buy such thing is just a sick as the people that make them so sick!!!!!!
