As a general statement, I should probably talk about how I like to record. When I'm in the studio (assuming that the studio has enough tracks to indulge me), I use both DI's on the back of my head (one running dry, the other wet) and then I mike whatever cabinets I'm using at the time. For each of these tracks, I'm going to list the effects that I used on the wet channel. If you don't hear much in the way of effects, it's probably because the dry channel was emphasized during the mixdown.
Back in the summer of 2003, I went into the studio with Rich to redo the bass tracks on JoS' demo. Here's one of the tracks from that demo.

This track was recorded using my Kubicki fretless
drop tuned a whole step (C-G-C-F). The onboard EQ
notch was set to active with flat mids. For effects, I used a plate reverb with
a light chorus. Rich sings and plays all guitar parts, and Brad is on drums |

At the start of 2004, the four of us went into the studio to record a bar demo. The quality is really rough. At the time, we decided that we had a rather limited supply of money available for the demo and that the point of the exercise was to get something down that could be given to a bar or restaurant to let them get a feel for what the group sounds like. This is not release quality by any means. Below are a few of the tunes that we finished.
Waiting For Rain

HiFi | LoFi |
I did this track on my Fodera with a fairly flat EQ. There's
a slight reverb on the bass line, but otherwise the tracks are pretty dry. I was going for
a fairly straight ahead feel (within the genre), and I think it came out pretty well. |

Faena -- Written by

i did this song on my acoustic. For the most part, I'm playing
whole notes, giving Aref lots of room to move around. I liked the warm, full tone of the
acoustic for this song, particularly on the low B's in the A section. This tune has a large
room reverb and that's about it. |

Another song on the Fodera. This time, the EQ was set with a
scooped mids, for a more funky feel. I also changed the effects to tighten up the sound as
much as possible. This is an extremely busy song -- there's a lot going on, and I tried to
keep the groove moving while giving everyone else enough space. |

Persian Ballad
|
HiFi | LoFi |
This tune was done on the Kubicki with standard tuning (E-A-D-G).
The EQ is set pretty flat. I went with fretless not for the trademark "Mmmpphh-wwaaahhh" sound,
but rather for the gentle flow that can be produced from that guitar. Having no frets also
helped for some of the odder note choices in the song. |

In November of 2003, Douglass, Christine and myself went into the studio to record a demo. One of the better parts of their sound is their vocal harmonies. Here are a few tracks from their demo. Douglass is on lead vocals and all guitars, while Christine plays all the keyboards and sings harmonies. There are no drums on any of these tracks.
Hole In My Heart

I decided to use my Ibanez acoustic on this
track. The song is pretty much a traditional country/blues tune. The bass
line does a lot of bouncing between fourths, and the overall feel of the line
is almost polka-ish. I went with the acoustic (onboard EQ set with high mids
and rolled off highs) running through both a pitch modulation and a chorus to
get a really thick, fat bass line. |

I've Been Waiting
|
HiFi | LoFi |
This tune was recorded using the Kubicki fretless
in standard tuning (D-A-D-G). The onboard EQ
notch was set to active, with the punched mids. The bridge pickup was turned
off for a warm, full tone. For effects, I used a reverb, a little bit of pitch
modulation with both a light chorus and a slight delay. |

This Must Be
|
HiFi | LoFi |
I did this track on the Fodera with the onboard
EQ set to scooped mids, with the pickups rolled to emphasize the bridge pickup.
For effects, I used my standard 'funk' setting (a parameteric EQ coupled with a
very tight delay). Douglass wanted me to put a more funk oriented bass line to
offset the bluesy acoustic feel. I think the combination comes out well enough. |
